it is not too far away from manhattan. it is close to the epicenter of where hurricane sandy hit last week. the earthquake was 3 miles below ground. officials and residents felt tremors in the upper areas of their home and saw the walls vibrate. this area is still dealing with the aftermath of hurricane sand with down the trees and wires and power out. these images we are getting now is hurricane send the damage in mahwah. you can see the kind of damage they had last week and just before 1:00 this morning people feeling tremors from this earthquake which was two. 0.

fema has set up 10-distribution areas in the new york city area. >> state and county roads are open in a western maryland in garrett county after two feet of snow was dumped. about 5400 homes and businesses are still without power and the maryland army national guard has been helping with the recovery there. we are following new developments after howard university student was attacked at knife point in our own dorm room. police caught the suspect as some students have raised concerns about security in >> not only will buried -- whether the extra counseling on campus but also extra security after this violent attack at howard university. the 19-year-old female student was attacked at knifepoint and sexually assaulted in her own dorm room. the man was seen on

surveillance video. he has been arrested. there has been two separate attacks over the past week. is supposed to be a secured building. students and staff held a closed-door meeting over the weekend to discuss the issue and the university has beefed up its 24-hour security. we talked about the original attack that happened before the one here. a woman was in her home and stabbed multiple times. she was able to fight off her attacker before she was sexually assaulted. both women were treated and are expected to survive. it is very alarming at howard university and they say they are troubled by what has happened and the police chief cathy lanier says the suspect would not -- says us -- if the suspect

>> you are watching"good morning, washington." >> a preliminary hearing begins today in washington state before a u.s. soldier accused of slaughtering 16 afghan villagers. nine children were among those killed in the event last month. he will appear in a military court room in washington state and a hearing could last as long as two weeks to determine whether he will face a court- martial. he could get the death penalty. >> four people are dead and seven others hurt in a head-on crash that happened in elk grove, calif.. and as to the carrying nine people crossed the center divider. it collided with an oncoming car in both drivers and two passengers in each car were killed. >> there is amazing video of a crash that involved a utility

some wind and impact the northeast and there is concern about additional beach erosion or coastal flooding. we will watch the track of that closely and we may see a few snowflakes by wednesday morning. 47-52 degrees and tonight it will be downright chilly again. tomorrow morning, colder than this morning. >> we are in college park along the beltway. it is cool outside but it is not unusually cold nothing we have not felt this season. 42 degrees but those clouds are definitely keeping us insolated. we have clear conditions but colder inthe luray area.

let's look forward to the next several days. that coastal storm will happen wednesday-thursday and that is a chance for any kind of active weather. it looks like that will bring rain maybe even next with snow. the exact track of that season will be critical. it may depend on the elevation where the higher you are in upper montgomery county, for example, the better chance you have of seeing snow. we will keep you updated throughout the next couple of days. >> we have a couple of problems. if you leave the tyson's area, the inner loop heading toward maryland is there is a crash. this is live for you on the inner loop of the american legion bridge. only two lanes were getting by

about security after a student was attacked inside her dorm room. >> we're talking about two violent separate attacks just blocks away and the police chief says she is convinced that this man would have struck again if he was not arrested the second attack alarmed the campus here at howard university. it was friday when a 19-year-old female student was attacked at knifepoint. she was sexually assaulted inside her own about a week before, there was another woman in her home, about a block away and she was also attacked and stabbed multiple times. the brutal attack on the campus of howard university has prompted school officials and students to take action every female student was attacked at knifepoint and sexually assaulted in her own dorm room. >> i could not even sleep in my
